Travel & entry information

Understanding travel and entry requirements early helps students plan confidently. The information below highlights what to expect for Barcelona, including visas, arrival timing, and the Schengen 90-day rule.

Please note that because the academic program is under 90 days, there is no visa option available that would allow students to extend their stay beyond that period.

Students should plan to arrive on the official program start date and depart on the official program end date. Because the program schedule uses nearly all available days under the 90-day limit, there is very little flexibility to arrive early or remain afterward.

  • Entry Requirements

    • U.S. citizens: A student visa is not required, as the program is under 90 days.
    • Non-U.S. citizens: A visa may be required, depending on nationality. We strongly recommend confirming requirements with the appropriate consulate as early as possible.

  • The Schengen 90-Day Rule

Barcelona is located within the Schengen Zone (which includes most of Europe, but not Ireland or the UK).

    • Travelers may remain in the Schengen Zone up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period.
    • Time spent in Barcelona for the program counts toward those 90 days.
    • Students planning personal travel before or after the program should make sure their total time in the Schengen Zone stays within the limit.

Overstaying the 90-day allowance can result in fines or travel restrictions.

  • EU Passport Holders

Students who hold an EU passport are not subject to the 90-day/180-day Schengen limit. However, it is the student’s responsibility to confirm this information with the Spanish consulate to ensure compliance with all entry and travel requirements.
